Ah Donald Byrd what can be said that hasn't been said already. One of the greatest to ever do it. He in my humble opinion should be up there with some of the finest American composers of any music style.
This piece is a fine example of his work and risk taking pen. A great band including the young 21 year old Herbie Hancock, he sounds like he'll make it big one day. The playing of Pepper Adams is not to go unnoticed as Byrd and Adams have developed into a great horn line to compete with the likes of Bird and Diz in terms of iconography.
“Jorgies (named for a spot in St.Louis) is one of Donald's most intriguing ventures as a composer (yet). Donald says that there are touches here of George Russells Lydian chromatic concept: ”I wasn't deliberately using the system, but George came up to the club one night and heard the way we were running different scales simultaneously, and he recognized what we were doing." Note especially the continuity and expressiveness of Herbies passage here." - Leonard Feather (Royal Flush Liner Notes)
Just an absolute fantastic piece to play with a lil anticipation in the melody and a nice crunchy Pedal to play over its definitely going to be in my bag for a minute.
Hope you enjoy!
