Nai Nai

If you've been following for a while (thank you) you will know that I am a huge Donald Byrd fan. I think his writing and willingness to try new things is not only inspirational but essential in music and life. Every time I listen to him or view one of his compositions I learn something new about the music I play and myself.

This one is no different. Who is Nai Nai you ask? Who know knows, the liner notes that Nat Hentoff writes states that it's “dedicated to someone Donald knows” and that's about it. Me? I think its dedicated to a lady like most good songs usually are and the melody is soft and singing in a way. Maybe someone Donald knows from his past.

While the melody is imo, nursery rhyme like in nature the bridge is a classic Byrdian deviation from form as we go into left field before landings softly back into the last A.

A nice tune and all in all a treat to play. I've basically transcribed half the album now but that just goes to show how good Byrd was at his craft.
